Goldring redefines sonic possibilities with a Special Edition model of its flagship Ethos moving coil cartridge

World-renowned analogue audio specialist, Goldring, introduces Ethos SE – a special edition of its award-winning Ethos model. Sitting at the very top of Goldring’s range of moving coil cartridges, Ethos SE combines uncompromising engineering with unique new features to produce a cartridge of exquisite sound reproduction capabilities.

Thanks to a raft of exclusive and carefully engineered upgrades – including pure silver coils, low reluctance pole shoes and a black anodized, aircraft-grade aluminium body – Ethos SE sets entirely new standards in terms of detail retrieval, channel separation and low colouration. Even when judged against cartridges costing a great deal more, this new special edition cartridge delivers a totally immersive, thrillingly complete musical experience – which has always been the Goldring ethos.

Key features at a glance

  • New pure silver coils feature fewer windings with higher conductivity, reducing the effective tip mass and internal impedance of the pick-up for improved tracking and greater transient response.
  • Low-mass cross-armature core made from Swedish iron improves channel separation and produces a more realistic soundstage.
  • A vital line-contact diamond stylus features a narrow, low tip-mass, large contact-area that enhances high-frequency response and minimises distortion and colouration.
  • New low reluctance pole-shoes ensure smooth and extended frequency response via an exclusive process.
  • Low-resonance, aircraft-grade aluminium body is selected for its low density and superior rigidity.

New pure silver coils

Reducing the effective tip mass of any phonograph pick-up will enhance its performance. The Ethos SE relies on Ag 9999 pure silver coil windings which have very low internal resistance and lower mass because fewer windings are used. The coils therefore have a significantly lower mass than our standard copper windings. This means the Ethos SE is better able to negotiate or ‘track’ the record groove without losing contact. The upshot is greater transient response, a reduction in resonance throughout the audio band, and flatter overall frequency response.

Low-mass cross-armature

By using high permeability Swedish iron in a low-mass cross-shape, rather than the conventional (and heavier) square alternative, Goldring improves channel separation and delivers an armature assembly that can produce an extraordinarily realistic stereo soundstage. High frequency detail levels are improved, distortion is reduced, and mis-tracking is all-but eliminated.

Vital line-contact diamond stylus

In order to retrieve the highest frequencies in a recording, Ethos SE uses a narrow, low tip-mass, large contact-area diamond stylus. This vital-shank, nude design has a polyhedral, line-contact diamond profile, and is connected to the armature by a stiff-yet-lightweight alloy cantilever tube. So, as well as having a remarkably good high-frequency response, distortion, resonance and colouration are minimised.

GOL-1 generator

Originally developed during vinyl’s initial rise to ubiquity, the GOL-1 generator ensures a smooth and extended frequency response. It’s still handmade by Goldring, and here it is presented as an example of the company’s ongoing dedication to refinement of every aspect of its design and assembly. Exclusively for the SE version, the pole shoes have been subjected to a new process, which enhances the permeability of the metal, creating a lower reluctance magnetic circuit. This serves to flatten and extend the frequency response, especially in the upper registers where musical detail resides.

Aircraft aluminium body

The GOL-1 generator is fitted into a precision-milled 6082-T6 aircraft-grade aluminium body shell. This material was carefully selected for its low density and superior rigidity – and thanks to its anodised black finish it’s as good-looking as it is durable.

The Goldring Ethos SE moving coil cartridge is available in November priced £1,299 / €1,599 / $1,999

Goldring’s new E4 cartridge is the single most cost-effective upgrade owners of budget or midrange turntables will ever make

World-famous analogue audio specialist Goldring introduces its new flagship E Series moving magnet cartridge: E4. Designed as the ultimate upgrade for any modern budget or midrange turntable, E4 represents the pinnacle of E Series engineering and performance.

E4 is designed to be compatible with all medium-to-high-mass tonearms of the type found on the majority of budget to midrange turntables. And because it’s constructed using the same high-quality core as the other E Series cartridges in the range, E4 is ideal both for those who wish to upgrade an obsolete cartridge in its entirety or those who want to boost the performance of their existing E Series cartridge by replacing the stylus.

Key features at a glance

  • New super-elliptical nude diamond stylus features lower effective tip mass, improved rigidity and better high frequency detail retrieval than ‘bonded’ elliptical alternatives.
  • The lightweight and superior stiffness of the hollow aluminium cantilever allows the stylus to trace medium-to-high frequencies with greater accuracy.
  • Magnetic Duplex Technology™ allows a more accurate transcription of the stereo groove which results in a more accurate soundstage.
  • Expert adjustment facility: Unlike most designs, E4 allows micro-adjustments to be made during the production process, ensuring each cartridge leaves the Goldring factory with optimised channel balance and crosstalk settings.

New super-elliptical nude diamond stylus
The E4 features a ‘nude’ super-elliptical stylus of just 7.6 x 18 microns (0.3 x 0.7 mil), cut and polished from a single homogeneous piece of diamond. This makes for a lower effective tip mass of improved rigidity, which in turn means its ability to retrieve high-frequency detail is dramatically improved when compared to the ‘bonded’ elliptical stylus alternative. It’s far less likely to ‘mis-track’ or overshoot when tracing high-frequency groove modulations, and because of its finely polished 7.6-micron profile it can more effectively fit into closely packed inner grooves. Lower distortion, improved transient response and a flat frequency response all contribute to superior fidelity when compared to any price-comparable alternative.

Hollow aluminium cantilever
To complement its low tip-mass stylus, the E4 features a hollow aluminium cantilever tube. The light weight and superior stiffness of the material allows the stylus to trace medium-to-high frequencies with greater accuracy, while simultaneously reducing distortion and mis-tracking.

Magnetic Duplex Technology™
Stereo information is contained in a single ‘V’-shaped groove that has perpendicular sidewalls angled at 45 degrees. Conventional cartridges, which use a single large magnet interacting with two vertically mounted coils (one for left-channel information, one for right) to extract a stereo signal from the groove, can permit high levels of crosstalk – and consequently only a modest amount of left- and right-channel separation. E4 uses Goldring’s Magnetic Duplex Technology™ that positions two low-mass magnets at the same angles as the coils – so each magnet interacts only with its partnering coil. This allows the E4 to transcribe the information in the groove more accurately, and results in greater stereo separation and a more accurate soundstage.

Expert adjustment facility
‘Azimuth’ describes the angle that the vertical centre line of the stylus makes with the record’s surface – it must be exactly perpendicular to the groove. Owners of budget and midrange turntables usually have no facility to adjust the azimuth, so it’s vital the cartridge has been precisely adjusted before it’s fitted to the turntable’s tonearm – badly adjusted azimuth can cause increased crosstalk and uneven channel balance. E4 is designed to allow micro-adjustments to be made during the production process, ensuring each cartridge leaves the Goldring factory needing no further azimuth adjustment.

The Goldring E4 moving magnet cartridge is available in June/July priced £199 / €259 / $299

The Goldring E4 stylus is available in June/July priced £145.00 / €185.00 / $275

The Goldring E4 cartridge will be on show at the High End Show 2023 in Munich (18th – 21st May) in room A (Atrium) 4.1, F110.

Goldring’s new Eroica HX makes upgrading to a moving coil cartridge hassle-free

World renowned analogue audio specialists Goldring, introduces the latest member of its moving coil (MC) cartridge family, the Eroica HX. Joining the award-winning LX model in the Eroica range (‘Eroica’ translates as ‘Heroic’ in Italian), this high output, high-performance cartridge makes upgrading from a moving magnet cartridge to a moving-coil model straightforward.

The demanding nature of moving coil designs often prevents a clear upgrade path for vinyl enthusiasts. With the Eroica HX, turntable owners can enjoy the greatest gains in performance of an MC cartridge without the hassle of a system-wide upheaval – this cartridge delivers a stunning moving coil performance from a moving magnet input.

Arriving at a price comparable to that of a good moving magnet cartridge, Eroica HX is designed to work straight from the box, and to slot into your existing system with no fuss whatsoever. Simply install it in place of your old moving magnet cartridge, and enjoy improved dynamics, enhanced stereo imaging and controlled, distortion-free high frequencies immediately, with no additional equipment or any system adjustments required.

Key features at a glance:

  • New, pure-iron cross-armature design for low crosstalk and reduced effective mass
  • Ultra-fine, enamelled-copper windings for higher output and correct impedance matching
  • Equipped with Gyger II diamond stylus that traces frequencies as high as 50kHz without distortion
  • Housing made from lightweight Pocan® composite material, chosen for its anti-colouration properties

Eroica HX manages to combine thrillingly accomplished performance with unheard-of ease of use thanks to Goldring’s engineering know-how. By using numerous ultra-fine enamelled-copper windings – so fine they literally float – Eroica HX has output sufficient to work with moving magnet phono inputs without compromising the low crosstalk that moving coil designs are prized for.

And by deploying a new pure-iron cross-armature, the copper windings have a permeable path for the parallel magnetic field in which to operate, resulting in greater output and correct impedance matching. In addition, the cross-shape design can separate left and right stereo channels far more effectively than the moving magnet alternative. Eroica HX’s Gyger II diamond stylus has a tiny five micron playing radius, which means it can trace frequencies as high as 50kHz without distortion, and thanks to the cross-armature’s low mass it can react to musical transients with absolute precision.

This is, unsurprisingly, a delicate mechanism. So Goldring has ensured it’s fully protected by enclosing it in a light, rigid and attractive housing formed from Pocan®. As well as the benefits of its light weight and stiffness, Pocan® has no input into the sound the cartridge makes.

Eroica HX is compatible with virtually all tonearms, no matter if they’re straight, S-shaped or J-shaped, and no matter if they’re made from aluminium or carbon-fibre. Its standard size fitment means it can be mounted using standard fixings, from above or below the headshell. And it’s among the most obvious and cost-effective upgrades you can make to your vinyl audio system.

The Goldring Eroica HX moving coil cartridge is available in June priced £549 / €699 / $899.

Goldring unveils flagship Ethos moving coil cartridge

Goldring has announced its new Ethos moving coil cartridge; a top-of-the-range cartridge with outstanding sound reproduction capabilities, designed and hand-built in the United Kingdom. Measurements and listening tests show that the design of Ethos has achieved new heights of performance both on paper and in practice.

The use of a top quality Vital line-contact diamond stylus gives Ethos an exemplary ability to retrieve every last ounce of detail from the record groove; the high channel separation reproduces an exceptionally accurate and realistic stereo sound stage; at the same time the enhanced trackability and absence of colouration delivers undiluted enjoyment of the music.

Inside the Ethos

At the heart of the Ethos cartridge is Goldring’s hand-built GOL-1 moving-coil generator. Developed in the heyday of vinyl, it takes advantage of a lower coil inductance and reduced effective mass when compared to traditional moving magnet types to give a smooth, extended frequency response with enhanced trackability.

For Ethos, we have carefully improved numerous aspects of its design and assembly to further enhance its world class reputation. With modern set-up and test equipment at their disposal, our highly skilled UK based assembly team are able to precisely build and individually adjust each cartridge so that it is capable of retrieving every last detail from the record groove.

The result is that one becomes simply immersed in the musical experience… and that’s our whole Ethos.

Line-Contact Stylus The line-contact diamond profile provides a large contact area with the groove wall, improving the retrieval of high frequency detail and reducing groove wear. Its vital-shaped shank has a low tip mass giving the design exceptionally good trackability.
Alloy Cantilever The stiff and lightweight alloy cantilever tube has been tuned to the ideal length for cartridge stability and ride height. Its length has been optimised to reduce inertia in the suspension system and improve trackability.
Cross-Shaped Armature The coils are wound around a cross-shaped armature of pure, high-permeability, Swedish iron. The reduced unsprung mass improves the ability for the stylus to track the groove wall and minimises cross-talk, improving the stereo image.
Optimised Suspension The new damper pad uses a bespoke butyl rubber compound to keep the system critically damped. Combined with an expertly tensioned tie-wire, the cartridge remains ultra-stable even during the loudest and most complex passages.
Neodymium Magnet A very light and powerful neodymium magnet is clamped between two pole shoes creating a perfectly uniform magnetic field gap, within which the cross armature is suspended. This gives Ethos its typically flat and extended frequency response.
Aluminium Body Shell The body is precision-milled from a low density, rigid, aircraft grade aluminium which helps to maintain a low effective mass and enables it to dissipate unwanted resonances into the tonearm where they are effectively ‘grounded’.

Goldring introduces entry-level E Series moving magnet cartridges

Goldring has announnced its new E Series Moving Magnet cartridges; a range of high performance, premium quality, British designed models for the resurgent turntable market.

The E Series, consists of three cartridges designed to deliver the accuracy of the original recording, to maintain the creative nuances, and to communicate the musicality and rhythm the artist intended the audience to hear. The Goldring E Series are optimised for the medium to high mass tonearms found on the majority of reasonably priced turntables.

Magnetic Duplex Technology™

All cartridges in the range use Magnetic Duplex Technology™, which lowers crosstalk and hence increases stereo separation. During the record mastering process the cutting lathe records stereo information as a ‘V’ shaped groove which has perpendicular side walls angled at 45 ̊.

Conventional moving magnet cartridges use a single magnet that interacts with two vertically mounted coils to produce a stereo signal from the groove. This can introduce crosstalk and so only offers a modest amount of stereo separation.

The Goldring E Series cartridges feature a special dual magnet arrangement. Magnetic Duplex Technology™ uses two low mass magnets which interact only with their partnering pickup coil,
angled at 45 ̊ to match the cutting head arrangement. This enables the cartridges to more accurately trace the record groove because they precisely emulate the geometry of the cutting head, making for better stereo separation and a more accurate, involving and musical soundstage.

The E Series

Featuring spherical styli with a choice of cantilevers, the E1 and E2 models are ideal as an improved replacement for any budget, pre-fitted or obsolete cartridge. The E3 model with its refined elliptical stylus is a worthwhile upgrade for those wishing to squeeze even more information and detail from the record groove.

The E1
Features a bonded, spherical (0.6 mil) stylus with a round shank. This makes the cartridge extremely forgiving of set-up adjustment. Also features a carbon reinforced ABS cantilever tube, an effective alternative to more premium aluminium or boron materials, producing comparable results in most entry level hi-fi- applications.

The E1 is available now priced £59.95/€69.99/$99.99

The E2
Features the same stylus profile as the E1 but with the additional benefit of an upgraded aluminium cantilever. This is both stiff and light weight allowing the stylus to more accurately trace medium to high frequencies offering more detail and reducing distortion and mis-tracking during loud passages.

The E2 is available now priced £79.95/€99.99/$129.99

The E3
Utilises the same aluminium cantilever but benefits from a superior bonded, super-elliptical (0.3 x 0.7 mil) stylus. This gives it superior high frequency groove detail retrieval ability over ordinary elliptical (0.4 x 0.7 mil) or spherical (0.6 mil) styli due to its smaller front to back radius. Its main effect is the reduction of sibilance, especially in high level vocal recordings.

The E3 is available now priced £99.96/€129.99/$169.99

Goldring established in 1906

The Goldring story began in 1906 with the supply of steel needles, springs and clockwork motors to the gramophone industry. Products were marked with a golden ring to indicate high quality of design and manufacture.

In 1926 Goldring introduced the Jewel Electro, arguably the most advanced gramophone soundbox of its day. During the decades following the war, as home hi-fi became a reality, Goldring was always at the forefront of innovation. The brand quickly became the industry standard for electro-magnetic pickups, with its 500 series cartridge becoming widely used throughout the broadcasting industry.

Today, Goldring continues to defy industry norms by producing high performance, premium quality, British-designed products for the specialist cartridge and turntable market.
